Why have there been so many films released in 3D this summer?
alexandra . asked:
It seems like every time I drive past the movie theater, they’re advertising a new film coming out in 3D. Is there any particular reason that this summer has been so full of 3D films?

3D technology has changed. The glasses are less annoying now, and therefore are more popular.
But it’s really just a fad.
because 3D is awesome!!!!
More recently, people haven’t been going to movie theaters due to economy and ability to download and watch movies online. 3D is a way to get these people back into movie theaters and make much more profit.
3D is really popular now, obviously.
because Americans are so stupid to realize that the 3d technology is repetitive and most movies with it rely on it for money and are terrible.
i think i understand that you have to “pitch” a movie first even before it is written or created.
those that have the money either like 3d or it has proven to be a money maker.
and it does have some kind of competitoin among studios.
after they make movies then they go to Auctions where they sell for distribution rights.
if buyers want the 3D then you have the competition among who has the best 3d
probably because the technology is the “new thing” in film making, and it became main stream technology and everyone wants to be the first to do this in 3D and that in 3D. its all about the benjamins.
3D is the flavor of the month in the movies, at the moment. People don’t mind the glasses as much as they used to. Maybe it’s because this last generation of film goers was raised on 3D movies in IMAX theaters. Just because a movie is in 3D doesn’t make it any better than a movie that is in 2D. It only means they are trying to attract an audience to see something that is relatively stupid in 2D but has a “WOW” factor in 3D - one that will make them tell their friends to go see it.
Well, computer technology is getting better and better. I believe the first ever 3D film to hit regular theaters was Spy Kids 3. That was an introduction to 3D feature films in regular theaters. Then once in a while an occasional film would come out in 3D. But you are right, this summer, this year even, is the first year with loads of 3D movies in theaters. The 3D technology has improved over the years, and the film companies find it a great way to make extra money on their movies. Like an extra 2 to 3 dollars. Hope this helps.
Well several factors have contributed to the growth of 3d films, the top reasons that I have read in news articles over the past few years are the following.
It all started in 2004 when they released Polar Express in 3d only in Imax theaters as it played in 2d in all other theaters. The 3d version sold so many tickets that it caught the attention of movie studios. So Next year they released Chicken Little in 3d and it sold a lot of tickets. Over the next three years they released about 3 3d moives each year and again the ticket sales where pretty high compared to 2d ticket sales.
Then during this time you had digital 3d come into play. This really made it much easier to produce films in 3d so it was much less of a headache for the movie studio to process the movies. Such as instant play back so adjustments can be made and the scene refilmed to make the 3d look better. No waiting for film developement. Cameras have computers to adjust the double lenses so alinement can be done instantly with great precision.
Also doing a film in 3d makes it quit a bit more expensive to make. You have to have extra staff that must be paid and more expensive equipment. I read it can add 15 to 25 million more dollars to the budget of a film. So adding more to the ticket price means they don’t lose as much money on the film which was a problem with attempts to do 3d in the past. The added cost just didn’t give studios enough reason to do 3d films. Now that problem has been eleminated.
All these things have caused the rise of 3d, but probably the biggest factor is the sale of 3d tickets. If people didn’t show up in enough numbers to see these movies then there would be no reason to make them. There are very few cities that don’t have the 2d version playing that also have the 3d version. So people can choose which version they want. Many are by passing the 2d version to see the 3d version.
About 2 weeks ago I read there are now 50 3d movies in production.
