Why do people get sports celebrities confused?

I work in a major supermarket near Miami, and Olindo Mare of the Miami Dolphins (along with several other players), were being filmed by a news crew for a media event. Some of the cashiers and other workers were all excited, and started collecting autographs. Another girl came by, and said they were filming Olindo Mare, when suddenly, he walked past us. The cashier I was assisting yelled: “It’s Alonzo Mourning, he used to play for the Buckeyes; I’ve just got to get his autograph”! I just stood there and looked at her funny. Even though I’m not a sports fan, I know that the two athletes look nothing alike, and have nothing to do with each other. What’s up with that?
