The proliferation of torture horror films like Saw and Hostel is quiet disturbing to me. These movies seem to go beyond startling with scary images and situations; they focus on suffering. Is this a sign of our times?

I work with middle school age children and they love watching these movies. What is it doing to their level of empathy and compassion? Are we creating sociopaths with no regard for others? The thing that disturbs me most is that they are watching them at all.

I have heard in the past that some people like watching horror movies because the monster is in plain view. The theory is that in real life unexpected and unseen dangers such as disease or corporate downsizing can come at you from anywhere, and viewing a movie with monsters is not only thrilling by alleviates fears. Does that fly for anybody?

I have never enjoyed horror films. I understand the thrill, but why is torture so successful and how can any parents share that with their child?

Disney used to be good before they went with Pixar, now they have cruddy movies like Monsters Inc, the Incridibles, etc. The only good Pixar film was Toy Story….
